Course Aim

The aim of this course is to provide architects, architectural graduates and architectural technologists with a comprehensive understanding of the techniques, materials, and processes involved in historic and decorative plasterwork. Through practical examples and expert insights, attendees will gain some of the knowledge needed to approach restoration projects with confidence, ensuring the preservation of architectural heritage.

Course Description

This webinar will provide an in-depth exploration of historic and decorative plasterwork techniques. Led by Paul Griffin, a third-generation plasterer with over 30 years of experience, attendees will gain insights into the materials and methods used in the conservation of Ireland's architectural heritage. The session will cover topics such as lime plastering, ceiling consolidation, breathable insulation for historic buildings, as well as the intricate crafts of mould making, marmorino, and scagliola. Expect to walk away with practical knowledge of plasterwork restoration and its application in heritage conservation.

Speaker Biography

Paul Griffin has a unique blend of expertise. First, Paul is a third-generation plasterer with over 30 years’ experience having first learned his skills from his father and uncle. In addition, Paul has a degree in Wood Science and Technology from the University of Limerick which gives him a strong understanding of some of the different materials used in conservation. Thirdly, Paul continuously updates his skills and knowledge by attending courses including Sculpting in National College of Art and Design in Ireland to Mould Making and Scagliola in Italy.

Paul and his team at Griffin Plastering have restored the Historic and Decorative Plasterwork on some of Ireland’s most prestigious buildings including The National Gallery of Ireland, The Goethe institut, The Shelbourne Hotel and Trinity College. Paul is on the board of the Building Lime Forum Ireland, on the board of the CIF (Construction Industry Federation) Heritage Skill Register and Griffin Plastering is on the Georgian Society Traditional Skills Register. Paul has acted as the Historic Plasterwork consultant for Irish Rail, OPW and numerous private clients.
