The starting pay for new entrants will be at the minimum of the scale and the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy.

Job Description

The Executive Architect will be assigned to the Architects Department of Mayo County Council. The role and function of the Architects Department is to assist the Local Authority in their delivery of a high-quality architectural service to a diverse client base and to work collectively with various departments within the local authority, other state agencies and the local community to enhance the attractiveness of the County as a place in which to live, work, visit, invest and enjoy.

The Architects Department provides architectural, planning, urban design and conservation services on a cross-departmental basis. Over the years Mayo County Council has developed a significant in-house expertise in the areas of house design, sustainable building construction, urban design, public realm works, and architectural conservation.

Current structures within the Department involve a central Capital Works Office, with responsibility for the design, procurement and delivery of the Authority’s Capital Construction Programme and Architectural Conservation led projects.

Architectural Services also, including the delivery of Capital Works, are provided within each of Mayo County Councils 4 Municipal Districts as follows:

  • Ballina Municipal District
  • Castlebar Municipal District
  • Swinford Claremorris Municipal District
  • Westport Belmullet Municipal District

The Executive Architect in this competition may be based in the Architects Department in Castlebar or at one of the 4 Municipal Districts throughout the county.

Job Requirements

Each Candidate must, on the latest date for receipt of completed application forms:

  1. Hold a professional qualification in Architecture that is prescribed under the Building Control Act 2007, or a qualification in Architecture, that is equivalent to a qualification so prescribed in Section 14 of the Building Control Act 2007.
  2. Be eligible for registration as an Architect under the Building Control Act 2007 without requiring further assessment. Any appointment by the employing local authority will be subject to registration under the Act.
  3. Have at least four years' satisfactory experience of architectural work.
  4. Have experience in the design of buildings, the preparation of sketch plans, working drawings, details and specification.
  5. Have a satisfactory knowledge of public service organisation or the ability to acquire such knowledge.
