RIAI + NZIA | A Sense of Place: Housing in the Landscape

The RIAI and the Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA  presents the second webinar in a series of collaborative panel discussions on subjects of interest to our communities.

Due to the time difference between Ireland and New Zealand, this webinar will take place as a breakfast webinar in Ireland (9-10.30am) and an evening webinar in New Zealand (8-9.30pm).

This second discussion is about contextual housing, and will cover a variety of responses to landscapes ranging from untouched wilderness to urban density, and many others in between.

Our panellists are: 

• Lance Herbst of Herbst Architects (NZ) will discuss his practice’s design responses to the powerful New Zealand landscape, with reference to beach houses in the upper North Island – projects where relaxed ‘bach’ culture meets the constraints of modern building regulation.

• Grace Keeley of GKMP Architects (IRL) will discuss the ‘contextual’ in her work – from Modernist influences to Irish materials and site and setting.

• Sally Ogle of Patchwork Architecture (NZ) will be talking about the architectural issues involved with steep sites, which are abundant, if not easily mastered, in New Zealand cities, and her practice’s design approach to several such sites.

• Robert Bourke of Robert Bourke Architects (IRL) will discuss his practice's diverse and considered responses (design, materiality etc), to sites and settings for residential designs.

The presentations will be followed by a webinar Q&A.
